Mario Monstree

I am an alternative rapper who loves to blend electronic and hip hop sounds together. Finding inspiration from the likes of Azealia Banks, Shygirl, M.I.A., Tommy Genesis & Death Grips.

Pulling inspiration from my witchcraft and folklore background, I find interest in anything spiritual or esoteric in nature. Creating a space where rhythm and rage can melt. For example, my song Sinwalker is a direct inspiration from the film Neon Demon, more specifically the “Demon Dance scene”, where the hypnotic fixation of strobing and synergy between the omnipresent shots of the floating subject in the middle of the light show, created such a unique feeling and helps drive the story without saying a word. Which is something I try to achieve with my art, not be so on the nose.

Even though the song like BOO! 2 I can be a little more camp, taking inspiration from Scream. This was a fun project, being one of my first songs ever created, recording the remix with my good friend Aluna Dragon was a great way to celebrate this past Halloween. It’s a fun and reference coded song, sharing my love of horror movies with my audience. We even created this short film to accompany the track, a parody of sorts with so many nods to other works, just like the film Scream.

Another track I take pride in would have to be “Angry Princess”, a straight up horrocore song that has endless references to the 2001 film Thirteen Ghosts.

I love creating visuals and telling stories through music and can’t wait to see how my career fleshes out.

My plan is to take as many opportunities as I can to express them, just like video game levels, and sequels to any franchise, the possibilities are endless when art is something you’ll never grow out of.

Performing is just the icing on top of the cake.

I have already performed at Phoenix Pride, opened up for cupcakKe, $Teven Cannon & BrokeNCYDE, performed at 5 Arizona Hip Hop Festivals and consistently performing around the gay club scene here in the valley, although the drive doesn’t stop there, Coachella, Glastonbury maybe even Bonnaroo next? Putting on a show gives me such a high and I can’t wait to bring more of my world to the stage.

The vibrancy and venom of it all awaits

Mario Monstree

Born and raised from South Phoenix Arizona, from a family four generations founded right here in Arizona.

Part Yaqui on my Mothers side and Mexican and Spanish on my Father’s, my family is rich in Chicano culture.

I was always a creative spirit, writing poems and short stories, inspired both by video games, music and film, dreaming of one day being a storyteller using the same artistic avenues I fell in love with.

Being fascinated with world building, I could easily find appreciation in so many different forms of art. Immersing myself into the complex craft of all the video games I played from Sly Cooper, Twisted Metal, Ratchet and Clank to Fatal Frame. Noticing the soundtrack and scores of these games brought my attention to my love of film scores as well, most specifically horror films. Being so young and noticing the intricate and well crafted design of all my favorites pieces of media really widened my eyes to what I was destined to do. I use art most importantly to deal with my struggles in life whether it be the bullying I endured in my youth, the family troubles of my younger teens and now the slow and steady triumph in my adult years. It was always to process life and to express everything through the most vibrant and rhythmic depiction I could deliver.

I created the name Mario Monstree after being a little monster myself, a big fan of Lady Gaga in my high school years. The Fame Monster really shaped me as young artist, introducing me the beautiful blend of the damned and the divine. Gaga really showed a generation of youth that limits were meant to be snapped and boxes were meant to be crushed. Till this day I haven’t shifted or changed the idea of what my name means to me. I’m here to express what is meant to be written or told, no matter the blur of genre or blends of execution.
